Is art going the online route?

My First Large Painting by Cherie Dirksen

Artists out there on the web.  Are you finding that selling online is a more lucrative option than galleries these days?  Does your work sit in galleries gathering dust?  Have you had selling success online?  I would love to hear your input on this subject and try to get a community of artists together to share their ideas and success stories...

 Cherie.

Advice for the promotion of your Art?
So you can paint?now what?
There are the obvious options like approaching your local galleries and begging for them to take you on (which is hopeless in some cases if you are not known already). Then there is the option of having an exhibition. This takes careful planning and a lot of hard, devotional work. When going for this option it is perhaps best to join a local art society as they usually have group exhibitions or befriend another artist and have a combined exhibition. This is sometimes the best avenue as you can both brainstorm about where would be the best place and how to get exposure (advertising, etc.).
The newest option is the internet. What a great tool we have right here at our fingertips!
The first step is to get good quality photos of your work. Then my advice is to join a site, like RedBubble.com, that allows you to upload your work for sale as cards, prints, calendars, etc and has a great community of artists that comment on your work. Just remember when joining a site like this that you must also take the time out to visit other artist?s sites and give them your feedback.
The benefits of these sites are not exactly going to boost your financial situation but it gives you great exposure and advice. A lot of these sites also offer ongoing competitions.
Any exposure is good exposure so get yourself out there. Some more useful sites for getting feedback and selling your art as prints are www.artistrising.com, www.artybuzz.com and www.paintingsilove.com.
There are also numerous online galleries you can join, a great example for South African artists is wwwsouthafricanartists.com. It is free to join if you are South African. If you are not South African, just Google for online galleries in your specific area/country. Many will require for you to submit your work for review and others will require monthly/yearly fees to sell your work. Here are some international online galleries I have found useful: www.artmajeur.com, www.yessy.com, www.look4design.co.uk and www.galleryfront.com.
There is, of course, the option of creating your own gallery. You can either get free web hosting where the only drawback is that you have pop-ups (adverts) on your webpage and your domain name will usually have the company you are using incorporated into it (e.g. www.cheriedirksen.webs.com) or you can find a website that offers no pop-ups, etc which you will have to pay either monthly or yearly fees for. I do advise that you try to get your own domain name (e.g. www.cheriedirksen.com) ? you can do this at www.godaddy.com or just Google ?domain register? and you can surf for your own deal. This you will have to renew yearly.
Finally, there are online auction sites. I use www.bidorbuy.co.za and find the site user friendly and very active. It is easy to sign up and even easier to start listing your work for sale. Their fees are low and they have very helpful staff. Other auction sites are www.mytrade.co.za, www.ebay.com and wwwtheartmarket.co.za.
Happy selling!
